This hymn expresses Spafford’s faith in the most grievous moments of his life. . After he had endured tremendous suffering – he sat down and penned these thoughts. He places his entire faith for the future in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross- offering redemption from sin for us all, and rejoicing in Christ’s promised return, bringing the dead in Christ with him.
It seems sentimental. But not to the billions who have known Jesus the Christ, His power, and His presence in their lives. Horatio Gates Spafford exemplifies this power. Power to encourage, lift us up, and console us in our darkest days. His life experience is very similar to that of the The Ancient – Job – 2200 BC Who, after he had suffered unimaginable loss and pain still said of his God – “Though He slay me, yet, will I trust Him!”
Because he had known the goodness of God. He could trust in that goodness – no matter how dark the days. “It is Well With My Soul” is considered the most comforting hymn of all time – consoling those who have suffered much.
